A Complete Guide to Visiting Moab, Utah

In this guide, we’re sharing everything you need to know to plan an unforgettable trip to Moab, Utah — including where to stay, eat, and adventure! Whether you’re exploring the red rock landscapes of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks or wandering the charming streets of downtown Moab, this guide will help you make the most of your visit. Moab is one of our all-time favorite destinations for both family adventures and couples getaways, and there’s SO MUCH to see and do that you can’t squeeze it all in with just one trip…unless you stay for like a MONTH! So, here’s some of the best things you can do if you only have several days or a weekend.

About Moab, Utah

Nestled between towering red cliffs and the winding Colorado River, Moab feels like stepping onto another planet—one sculpted by wind, water, and time. The landscapes here are surreal: massive sandstone arches, glowing mesas, sweeping canyons, and desert floors that shift colors with every hour of light. It’s no surprise Moab has become the ultimate basecamp for outdoor explorers, with easy access to Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, and countless BLM trails and scenic pullouts right outside town.

Moab is famous for epic off-roading routes, world-class mountain biking, rock climbing, canyoneering, stargazing, paddleboarding, rafting, scenic drives—and if that sounds like a lot, it is. The adventure here never ends.

Yet the town itself has a laid-back, welcoming vibe: boutique gear shops, cozy cafés, breweries, food trucks, art galleries, smoothie shacks, and friendly locals who genuinely love where they live. It’s just a cool town to relax in after a day of adventuring.

Best Time to Visit Moab

🌼 Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Moab. The temperatures are super comfortable (usually in the 60s–80s), the desert starts to pop with wildflowers, and the parks feel alive. This is when hiking, biking, and those longer adventure days feel really good. Just expect it to be a bit more popular this time of year—everyone else knows it’s perfect too.

☀️ Summer (June–August)
Summer in Moab is hot—like, really hot. It’s not unusual to see temps climb past 100°F during the day. But here’s the thing: mornings and evenings are still absolutely incredible. If you go in summer, just flip your schedule a bit. Think sunrise hikes, mid-day downtime (pool / river float / iced coffee run), and sunset adventures. And stay hydrated!  Always bring water on any excursion.

🍂 Fall (September–October)
Fall might be our favorite season in Moab. The weather cools off, the crowds thin just a little, and the lighting in the evenings turns everything into a painting. It’s perfect for photography, longer hikes, and family trips where you don’t want to battle the heat. Everything just feels calmer in the fall. This is when we try to visit Moab every year, but sometimes we end up there in November, which is still great!

❄️ Winter (November–February)
Winter is Moab’s quiet season. You’ll get cooler days and cold nights, but the trade-off is almost no crowds. Some days you may feel like you have the park entirely to yourself. Trails can get icy after storms, so traction and layers help—but if you love peaceful overlooks and empty trails, winter is a hidden gem. We’ve been to Moab in November the last few years and the mountain biking is fantastic (yet cold) in the morning, but the days warm up so nicely for hiking and exploring.

Getting to Moab

Moab is located in southeastern Utah, about 4 hours from Salt Lake City and just 2 hours from Grand Junction, Colorado. The closest airport is Canyonlands Field (CNY), 20 minutes north of town, but it is tiny so most visitors fly into Salt Lake City or Grand Junction and drive.

🚙 Once in Moab, driving is the best way to explore. There’s no public transportation, but rental cars, Jeeps, and e-bikes are widely available.

Where to Stay in Moab

From rustic campsites under the stars to boutique hotels with red-rock views, Moab has a ton of different ways to stay depending on your travel style. Whether you’re rolling in with an RV, planning a family adventure basecamp, or looking for a cozy place to unwind after long desert days, you’ll find something here that fits.

🏨 Hotels & Lodges

Moab has a surprisingly good selection of hotels—some simple and practical, others full-on “treat yourself” staycation material.

  • Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton — Upscale, modern, walkable to downtown. Amazing pool area and spa. Great for couples or a special trip.
  • SpringHill Suites by Marriott — Family-friendly, bright rooms, nice pool area, and close to Arches. Solid home base.
  • Hyatt Place Moab — Clean, stylish, and comfortable with beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs. Nice breakfast setup.
  • Moab Valley Inn — Reliable mid-range option with indoor/outdoor pool. Good location for “spend all day exploring, come back to crash.”
  • Expedition Lodge — Retro-fun décor, arcade games, and a pool with a slide. A hit with kids. Walkable to food + shops downtown.
  • Riverside Inn — Right near the Colorado River and easy access to scenic morning walks.

If you want something quiet and scenic: Look on the north side of town. If you want walk-everywhere convenience: Stay downtown.

🏕️ Camping & RV Parks

Camping in Moab hits different. The sunrises, the stars, the silence…it just feels like you’re connected to the land.

  • Goose Island Campground — Riverfront, dreamy views, first-come-first-served. If you snag a spot, it’s gold.
  • Sun Outdoors Arches Gateway — Full-service RV resort with amenities like a playground, pool, and bathhouses. Very family-friendly.
  • Moab KOA Holiday — Pool, cabins, tent sites, and RV hookups. Great for families who like convenience.
  • Sand Flats Recreation Area (near Slickrock Trail) — Rustic, scenic, quiet, and amazing stargazing. No frills… but wow the views.

Note: Spring and fall campgrounds fill fast — if reservations are available, book early. For first-come sites, arriving early in the day helps big time.

🛌 Vacation Rentals & Glamping

If you want more space, privacy, or just your own kitchen, rentals are the way to go.

  • Local casitas & condos on the edges of town offer quiet settings + easy drives to the parks.
  • Many homes and suites come with garage parking for bikes / gear, which is huge for adventure trips.
  • Views of the La Sal Mountains or the red cliffs are common—and worth seeking out.

🌙 Glamping & Luxury Desert Stays

If you want the National Geographic desert dream… this is it:

  • Under Canvas Moab — Safari-style tents, firepits, lanterns, and desert silence. Perfect for couples, but families love it too.
  • ULUM Moab (by Under Canvas) — A more elevated, eco-lux, architectural desert stay. Think: glass walls + natural textures + canyon views. It feels like stepping into a Patagonia catalog.

These stays run higher in price, but they deliver experiences — not just a place to crash.

Quick Tips when Choosing Where to Stay:

  • Summer trips → prioritize pool access & air conditioning.
  • Spring & fall → everything books early, so reserve sooner than you think.
  • Plan to enter parks at sunrise? Stay north or east of downtown to cut drive time.
  • Traveling with kids? Expedition Lodge, SpringHill Suites, and KOA Moab are all great picks.

🪂 Paragliding:

  • Paraglide Moab — This is one we want to try to badly!  They provide scenic tandem flights over red rock canyons and it looks epic!

🪂 Moab Rope Swing:

  • Rope Swing Moab — One of the wildest experiences in the Moab area: you’ll ride out on an off-road shuttle, hike to the edge of a 400-foot cliff, strap in and leap off the cliff to swing over the canyon. This is another adventure we want to try in Moab, but it’s not for the faint of heart! It’s CRAZY!!

  • Thai Bella — One of Moab’s standout Thai restaurants, offering authentic dishes like curries, stir-fries, and noodle bowls with excellent vegetarian options. Perfect when you want bold flavors and something different from typical road-trip fare.
  • Arches Thai — Another local favorite for Thai food. A little faster-paced than Thai Bella and great for takeout when you want to grab dinner and head back to your hotel or campsite.

Delicate Arch

Itineraries

🗓️ 1-Day Itinerary for Moab

If you only have one day in Moab, you’re going to want to make it count. Start before sunrise and head into Arches National Park. Watching the first light hit Delicate Arch is one of those moments that sticks with you. It’s quiet, peaceful, and unbelievably beautiful.

After your hike, swing back into town and grab breakfast at Love Muffin Café — their breakfast burritos and smoothies are exactly what you want after a morning on the trail.

From here, you have two directions to go depending on your style:

  • If you’re feeling adventurous, book an off-road Jeep or UTV tour with one of the tour companies.
  • If you’d rather take in views at a slower pace, head toward Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky) and spend a few hours exploring overlooks like Mesa Arch and Grand View Point.

In the evening, stroll downtown, check out the gear shops and galleries, and grab dinner at Singha Thai or Moab Brewery. End the day stargazing near Balanced Rock or just outside town — Moab’s night sky is unreal.

🗓️ 2-Day Itinerary for Moab

Day 1 – Arches + Downtown

Start your morning in Arches National Park. See Delicate Arch, wander the Windows Section, and stop for photos at Balanced Rock.

Pick up lunch from Sweet Cravings Bakery and head to Rotary Park — shaded, laid-back, and perfect for families.

In the afternoon, choose between:

  • Moab Giants Dinosaur Park (super fun for kids)
  • Doing a relaxing float on the Colorado River (perfect on warm days)

End the day with dinner at Moab Brewery or Zax, and then walk downtown while everything still feels warm and glowing.

Day 2 – Canyonlands + Off-Road Adventure

Head to Canyonlands: Island in the Sky. Catch the morning glow at Mesa Arch, then explore Grand View Point.

In the afternoon, book an offroad tour with one of the tour companies — let someone else drive while you just lean into the views.

For dinner, go somewhere a little special — Desert Bistro is our pick. If you still have energy, consider a night jet boat tour along the river if they’re running — the canyon walls look incredible in moonlight.

🗓️ 3-Day Itinerary for Moab

This plan gives you time to actually settle in, explore the parks, and sprinkle in a little adventure.

Day 1 – Arches + Downtown Moab

Start at Delicate Arch for sunrise, then wander the Windows and Double Arch (both great for photos and kids).
Grab lunch at Love Muffin Café and spend some time browsing Moab Made, Back of Beyond Books, and the local gear shops.
End your day watching the rocks glow at Sand Dune Arch or Panorama Point, then dinner at Moab Brewery.

Day 2 – Canyonlands + River Time

Explore Canyonlands: Island in the Sky in the morning — Mesa Arch, Green River Overlook, and Grand View Point are non-negotiable.
In the afternoon, trade red rock for water and book a half-day rafting or SUP trip with Red River Adventures, Moab Adventure Center, or Mild to Wild Rafting.
Dinner at The Spoke on Center, followed by ice cream downtown.

Day 3 – Off-Road + Scenic Drive

Today is your off-road day. Take a 4×4 adventure with Moab Adventure Center, Dan Mick’s Jeep Tours, or Outlaw Adventure Tours — this is where Moab’s wild landscape really comes alive.
Later, take a slow, scenic drive along Highway 128 toward Fisher Towers or along Potash Road to see petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks. The views along the river are unreal, especially late afternoon into sunset.
Dinner at Desert Bistro, then find a quiet place outside town for one last stargazing session.

🗓️ 4-Day Itinerary for Moab

Day 1 – Settle In + Sunset Views

Check into your stay and take an easy warm-up hike to Corona Arch or Negro Bill Canyon.
Drive out to Dead Horse Point State Park for sunset — it’s dramatic, open, and easy to access.

Day 2 – Arches National Park

Do Delicate Arch early to beat crowds, then head to Devils Garden and hike to Landscape Arch (and beyond if you’re feeling strong).
Picnic lunch inside the park.
Finish the day at Double Arch and The Windows where the sunsets are AMAZING before dinner in town.
Stargaze at Panorama Point if skies are clear.

Day 3 – Canyonlands + River

Head back to Canyonlands, this time exploring at a slower pace — Mesa Arch, Grand View, Upheaval Dome if you want to see something totally different.
In the afternoon, book a rafting trip on the Colorado River for a refreshing change of scenery.
Dinner at Zax followed by a walk along the Colorado River Pathway.

Day 4 – Off-Road + Scenic Finale

Do an off-roading tour (Hell’s Revenge is the classic).
Spend your last afternoon driving the Highway 128 / Fisher Towers corridor or along Potash Road to see petroglyphs and dinosaur tracks. Stop often. Take pictures. Let it sink in.
Dinner at 98 Center or Antica Forma, and watch the cliffs take on their final red-gold glow.
